Before he had realized he was doing it Potemkin had been paying rapt attention to how Ky looked in front of him, out of a desperate attempt to read any sort of reaction from him. Now that he can see shock and bewilderment, he feels foolish. He chatises himself for thinking there was anything to expect in the first place, let alone form hopes.
